GIS Data Set Details

Data Set Name Description Theme Metadata
Mined Land Permit This data comes from the Division of Mineral Resources Mined Land Reclamation Program files and depicts point locations of most New York State Regulated mines permitted since 1975. Mines have areal extent but are represented as points, and coordinate locations are approximate. This data has not been field verified but is expected to be within 100 meters of the actual facility location. The version of the database loaded into the geographic data set has not been completely error checked. Some errors in location or attribute values may exist. The geographic data set may also contain multiple points at a single location. Mines in the database that lack coordinates or that have grossly incorrect coordinates do not appear in the geographic data set.The data should not be used for precise determination of facility buildings, property or mine entrances. DECs Division of Mineral Resources maintains a data management system on mines regulated under the Mined Land Reclamation Law (MLRL), enacted in 1975. Mines operated and closed prior to that date were not regulated or tracked by the Division. Roughly 5,400 mines are in the system, with approximately 2400 active mines and the rest reclaimed since 1975. To assist the Division in the regulation of the extractive mineral industry a database of the mines was created in the early 1980's and significantly upgraded in 2002. This is primarily a regulatory database and does not track production volumes.   Miscellaneous
