GPS Data Collection Guidelines
Subject Area / Scope:
These guidelines provide a means of quality control and accurate documentation of Geographic Information System (GIS) data sets created with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. The guidelines cover recreation and mapping grade GPS units only. Guidelines for survey grade GPS data collection are outside the scope of this document.
Need:
A number of New York State (NYS) agencies and contractors doing work for NYS agencies use GPS for data collection to create GIS data sets. Currently there are no existing formal statewide GPS data collection and reporting standards, resulting in inconsistent use of GPS for GIS data collection. NYS agencies have asked for a set of minimum guidelines to follow when using GPS to collect data that will be used in a GIS.
Integration:
No additional budget or additional resources are foreseen in usage of these guidelines.
