Depicts areas damaged by a 1950 windstorm in and around the Adirondack Park, New York State.
<purpose>May be used as a historical reference of land use and major disturbances in the Adirondack Park.</purpose>
<supplinf>On November 25, 1950, a major windstorm caused significant damage in the western and central sections of the Adirondack Park.

The hardcopy map from which this digital data set was created is a creased paper blueprint developed by the New York State Conservation Department. According to the map, the areas of storm damage were determined from aerial reconnaissance data. The blueprint was drawn by the Forest General of the New York State Conservation Department, Gerald J. Rides. The scale bar indicates the map was drawn at a 1 inch = 4 miles scale. A legend appears at the bottom of the map with the following information: 25-50% Blowdown; 50-100% Blowdown; County lines; Adirondack blueline; State land.

The 25-50% Blowdown category polygons are indicated by a pale dashed outline. These lines are very faint in some instances. A digital Arc/Info interchange file containing a nearly complete representation of the 1950 Blowdown map was created by the staff from the Center for Remote Sensing at SUNY Plattsburg. The polygons on the original map were copied on to a cartographically correct 1:250,000 NYS DOT base map, then digitized.</supplinf>

<procdesc>Applied GIS, Inc. processing steps: Intersections of county boundaries on the original hardcopy map were used to generate a tic file of UTM coordinates. A total of four tic marks were included in the file. This file was used to register hardcopy map. Digitizing of ten polygons missing from the SUNY Plattsburg digital coverage was completed on a Calcomp 9500 digitizing tablet. The RMS registration error was 0.013. This coverage was built with the POLY option. Next, the arcs were added to the existing 1950 Blowdown coverage using the GET command in ArcEdit. Label points were added to each of the new polygons, and values for the "Percent" item were entered. The composite coverage was then built with the POLY option. The PROJECT command was used to change the projection from UTM NAD 27 to UTM NAD 83. A look-up table called blowdn.lut was created to cross-reference to the original legend categories. The list below indicates the description associated with each code: 5 = 50 to 100% Blowdown; 6 = 25 to 50% Blowdown; 7 = None (Internal Polygon)</procdesc>

<procdesc>Applied GIS, Inc. QA/QC analysis: Quality Assurance/Quality Control was determined by a series of tests. The final coverage was visually inspected interactively through comparison to the source material (the hardcopy map). The data set was thematically mapped by "Percent" and printed at the same scale as the source material. The printed check plot was positioned next to the original hardcopy map for cross-examination. The operator checked for consistency between the source material and the final coverage in terms of coding and position of graphic objects and attributes (fields and content). The geographic extent was confirmed by zooming to the full extent to identify potential outliers located beyond the range displayed on the original hardcopy map. Objects with extreme area size (small or large) were identified in ArcView by sorting the attribute table by area. Small slivers and unusually large polygons were examined. The accuracy of the type of attribute fields was verified by examining the Arc/Info Items listing. Creating a summary table in ArcView confirmed valid attribute values. The coordinate system of the final data set was verified by examining the coverage description in Arc/Info, as well as overlaying the data over a coverage known to be in the desired projection. Consistency between the known coverage and the 1950 Blowdown layer was evaluated.</procdesc>
