A generalized hydrography layer of New York State suitable for use in GIS and other small scale mapping (8.5 inch x 11 inch paper size mapping).

Linework represents major rivers, major streams, and open water shorelines including major islands. Polygons and their associated label points are attributed with 'yes' if they represent water or 'no' if they do not. REGION.WATER is the ARC/INFO region subclass that represents only water body features. The coverage extends some shorelines of large bodies of water outside of New York State in the interest of completeness: Atlantic Ocean, Connecticut shoreline, Lake Champlain, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Massachusetts shoreline, New Jersey Shore, Rhode Island shoreline and St. Lawrence River.

Process_Description:
Existing NYS 1:1,000,000 scale raster and 1:250,000 scale vector base mapping were used to verify and manually generalize an existing NYSDOT 1986 1:1,000,000 scale CADD Hydrography file. Pertinent out-of-state shorelines and rivers were added from the US Government’s 1:3,000,000 scale World Data Bank II. Polygon topology was established in the coverage, and polygons with area less than twenty million square meters were eliminated. The file was then manually edited to ensure clean topology. The hydrography linework was generalized to 1:3,000,000 scale using ESRI’s ‘BENDSIMPLIFY’ line generalizing tool with a weed tolerance of 1500 meters. Polygons were attributed with a 'yes' if they represent water, and 'no' if they do not. An ARC/INFO region subclass (REGION.WATER) was built from the polygons representing open water.
