Description:
Abstract:
Contains hydrographic features in New York represented by lines and polygons.
Purpose:
A hydrography layer suitable for use in GIS and for 1:250,000 scale base mapping.
Supplemental_Information:
1:250,000 scale. Zone 18 of the UTM grid/projection system (Zone 18 is extended to cover New York State entirely in a single grid zone).

Completeness_Report:
All permanent and intermittent streams at least 1.5 miles in length are shown. Streams greater than 500 feet wide for at least 0.5 miles are shown with double lines representing the shorelines. The New York State Canal System and the Shinneock Canal are shown; other canals are symbolized as streams. Major man-made hydrography features such as dams (at least 1,000 feet long) and locks are shown. Open water bodies with area greater than 6.4 acres are shown. Swamps with area greater than 160 acres are shown. Islands with area greater than 2 acres are portrayed as 'island linework' converted to either ocean shoreline, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, or double-line stream. Lines are attributed with feature level and description. Polygons and their associated label points are attributed with 'yes' if they represent water or 'no' if they do not. REGION.WATER is the ARC/INFO region subclass that represents only water body features. The coverage extends some shorelines of large bodies of water outside of New York State in the interest of completeness: Atlantic Ocean, Connecticut shoreline, Lake Champlain, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Massachusetts shoreline, New Jersey Shore, Rhode Island shoreline and St. Lawrence River.

Process_Description:
Created by merging the USGS 30' x 60' 1:100,000 scale Digital Line Graphs (DLG) that cover New York State. The merged files were then reformatted and reclassified to the same standards as the existing County Base Map (CBM) hydrography files. Where CBM hydrography files exist, the DLG alignments were clipped out and replaced with the more up-to-date CBM files (also originally derived from 1:100,000 scale DLG files). The file was then compared to NYS 1:24,000 scale quadrangles, and missing hydrography features were 'heads up'digitized from the raster quadrangle backdrops. The file was also edge matched at the 7.5' x 7.5' quadrangle edges and along county boundaries where CBM Hydrography files replaced the DLG alignments. Lines and polygons were then deleted if they did not match selection criteria for the 1:250,000 scale mapping. Linework character was generalized using ARC/INFO's generalize command with a 15 meter tolerance, as appropriate for 1:250,000 scale mapping. The file was converted from a CADD format to a GIS coverage as of the Process Date. Polygon topology was created on the GIS coverage, and linework was attributed with feature description. Pertinent out-of-state shorelines and rivers were added from the US Government’s 1:3,000,000 scale World Data Bank II. A separate ARC/INFO region subclass (REGION.WATER) was created to easily identify water polygons.
