Abstract:
A map of the documented SAV habitat created from the aggregate extent of submerged aquatic vegetation in the Hudson River Estuary mapped in all six inventories (1997, 2002, 2007, 2014, 2016, 2018). In SAV communities Vallisneria americana and Myriophyllum spicatum are dominant in association with Ceratophyllum dermersum, Elodea muttallii, Najas sp., and Potamogeton perfoliatus.  The designation "submerged aquatic vegetation" explicitly excludes plant communities in which Trapa natans is dominant in association with Spriodela polyrhiza, Myriophyllum spicatum, and Nuphar advena.
Purpose:
This dataset documents areas where SAV has been known to occur and thereby considered acceptable habitats. SAV is an important habitat and site of primary production in many aquatic ecosystems. Prior to 1995 there was no baseline information on SAV extent or distribution in the tidal freshwater Hudson River or any information on how the extent of SAV is changing with time in the Hudson River Estuary. The 2018 mapping project is a continuation of the 1997, 2002, 2007, 2014 and 2016 SAV monitoring efforts. The current SAV mapping was conducted in order to determine the status of the resource in 2018, and to compare the extent of SAV in 2018 with that observed in 2016. This dataset is a derivative of the 2018, 2016, 2014, 2007, 2002, and 1997 datasets.
Supplemental information:
SAV mapping in the Hudson River Estuary was conducted in six time periods with different sources of funding. The 1997 mapping was initiated with NOAA funds, Hudson River Foundation funds, and N.Y. State Environmental Protection Funds through the Hudson River Estuary Program (HREP). In 2002, 2007, 2014, 2016 and 2018 mapping was undertaken with N.Y. State Environmental Protection Funds through HREP.

In 1994, a collaboration was initiated between the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES), now the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, HRNERR/NYSDEC, and the Cornell Laboratory for Environmental Applications of Remote Sensing (CLEARS), now IRIS. In addition, New York Sea Grant, HREP, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are identified as partners. These groups provided diverse expertise to enable the first broad delimitation of SAV in the Hudson.

Major tributaries and coves were mapped in addition to the main river area.

Logical consistency report:
The 2018 SAV inventory included broad delimitation of SAV and Water Chestnut beds in the Hudson River Estuary using aerial photography for primary data collection. Field sampling of random points was used to verify the photo interpretation, following established digital image processing accuracy assessment protocols. SAV and water chestnut polygons were visited in the field.

The shape file includes all SAV areas observed in the Hudson River Estuary from Hastings-on-Hudson north to the Federal Dam at Troy for the inventory years of 1997, 2002, 2007, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

This dataset is an aggregation of all areas mapped as SAV in the individual inventories. It documents areas where SAV has been known to occur and thereby considered acceptable habitats. The data quality information given here and the process steps described document the efforts of the 2018 survey, which was typical of the 2016 inventory. Delineation of the three land cover categories (Upland/Intertidal, Vegcode=1; SAV, Vegcode=2; Trapa natans, vegcode=3) was accomplished through on-screen digitization of digital aerial photography. The smallest feature that could reliably be drawn using this system was a polygon with an area of 5-10 m2 at a scale of 1:500. Polygons as small as 5m2 were created and were later aggregated to the minimum size delineation of 60m2 with polygons within 10 meters of each other being merged. Maps were created to be displayed at a scale of 1:24,000.

All polygons identified as Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (VEGCODE=3, TYPE=VA) were extracted from SAV_2018, SAV_2016, SAV_2014, SAV2007_83, SAV2002_83, and SAV1997_83 to create Documented_SAV_Habitat_2018. The "Id" field for all polygons of Documented_SAV_Habitat_2018 was calculated to be equal to "0" and then all polygons were dissolved on "Id" to create a single polygon of documented SAV habitat.
