Description:
Abstract:
Morphological units of the Hudson River Estuary from Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Troy. Areas of the Hudson River shallower then 4 meters have not been surveyed and sampled completely.
Purpose:
The Hudson River Estuary Program was established in 1987 in response to passage of the Hudson River Estuary Management Act, Section 11-0306 of the Environmental Conservation Law. The law directed the DEC to develop a management program for the Hudson River Estuarine District and its associated shorelands (the estuary from the Troy dam south to the Verrazano Narrows, including tidal portions of tributaries).

Process_Description:
The proposed morphology interpretation framework is based on identifying the major regions of the river based on depth ranges and slopes using the multibeam bathymetry data collected by SUNY Stony Brook. The bathymetry data was acquired using DGPS positioning. The horizontal accuracy is +/- 1 meter. The multibeam bathymetry data were loaded into ArcView as raster data with a 2 meter grid size. The slope was calculated. Polygons were manually drawn guided by depth and slope values. The polygons were outlined by hand using a variety of map scales. In general the interpretation would map features as small as 2500 sq meters, but not every small detail at this scale might be included.
