- Abstract:
- This dataset is intended for archival purposes only and represents an incomplete version of New York State Aquifers. No further updates will be issued. It is recommended users refer to DEC's Unconsolidated Aquifers at 1:250,000 for more current and complete coverage. The data set consists of aquifer polygons or regions depicting
unconsolidated aquifers in New York State, excluding Long Island.
Aquifers are separated by and include attributes for potential yield
ranges and confinement indicator. Edition 2.0 of this data includes
38 aquifer polygons missing from edition 1.0 (additional polygons
are included in a separate file report: <Missing_Aquifers.dbf>
- Purpose:
- To present improved resolution aquifer data with aquifer spatial
extents matched to yield ranges. NOTE: Since 2008, DEC's Unconsolidated Aquifers at 1:250,000 replaces this coverage as a completed Aquifer dataset for New York State.
- Supplemental_Information:
- Aquifer boundaries and yield ranges are derived from paper maps
(5 WRIs: 87-4122, 87-4274, 87-4275, 87-4276, and 88-4076) produced
for the low level radioactivity siting board (4/89). Original vector
linework representing composited aquifer limits were available from
the LLRW which was digitized over USGS Topographic Maps at a scale
of 1:250,000. This data set captures the remaining information contained
in the original paper maps.

- Native_Data_Set_Environment:
- The data set was created in the Windows 98 operating system using MapInfo
Professional version 6.0. The data includes a set of ESRI Arcview shape
files translated from the native MapInfo files. The software programs
used to validate and quality control the vector data included MapInfo,
Topocheck, Universal Translator (the FME translation engine included with
MapInfo), and ArcLink.

- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Regions were repeatedly checked using TopoCheck 2.00 and reported overlaps, bow ties, shared nodes, slivers and gores were fixed. MapInfo’s check region command was also used as well as SQL queries for identifying overlapping spatial features. Final quality control was verified by translating the regions into ESRI shape file and e00 formats and inspecting translation reports.
- Completeness_Report:
- Aquifers presented in this data set do not include all aquifers in
New York State. Omissions include aquifers on Long Island, and aquifers
below the original LLRW minimum mapping unit criterion of less than 1
square mile that was applied to the initial digital capture of features
shown on the USGS maps. In addition, a number of smaller aquifer features
within the original digital aquifer boundaries are not included in this
data set as these features were below the accuracy of the mapping process
used. In this newest edition, some omitted aquifers were added.

Original aquifer regions were edited to reflect potential yield boundaries shown on the original paper maps and digitized directly using the computer monitor display. Regions were edited using MapInfo Professional version 6.0 with new regions being clipped directly from the original aquifer boundaries. Each new aquifer was individually attributed according to mapped values. Temporary region objects were also created to facilitate editing processes. All region objects were inspected for errors using a sequential process throughout the editing process.

Overview_Description:
-
- Aquifers are listed according to three types (Aquifer_type: confined, unconfined, unknown). The GPM (gallons per minute) field lists four potential yields (GPM: 5 ->500; 10 - 100; >100, and blank). For confined aquifers (not linked directly to surface flow), only a single range yield is provided (5 ->500) with no further information. For unconfined aquifers, potential yield is refined into the two categories of 10 - 100 and >100. Unknown aquifer types do not list potential yields. An example of mapped aquifer yield data is provided in an accompanying file (Chemung_Aquifer.jpg). Area (square meters) and perimeter (meters) is provided for each aquifer polygon. A comments field includes two main categories of information. For aquifers of unknown aquifer type, comments include geologic descriptors used in the original data to identify a probable aquifer location. Geologic descriptor values include: L - Lacustrine or eolian deposits, fine to medium sand that probably yields less than 10 gallons per minute; G - kame, kame terrace, kame moraine, outwash, or alluvium, sand and gravel of unknown thickness or saturation where yield potential is greater when streams are present; M - Moraine, mostly till and lacustrine deposits (very fine sand, silt and clay deposits) capped in some places with unsaturated sand and gravel with thin scattered confined aquifers of sand and gravel in some places; U - confined aquifer, areas of lacustrine deposits or till, possibly underlain by sand and gravel aquifers where depth and saturated thickness of aquifer not investigated. The second category of information under the comments field applies only to confined aquifer types and indicates whether a surficial aquifer is also present.
