More Information

How was the NYS Streets street centerline data created?

Most geometry was compiled from high resolution orthoimagery. A small percentage of the data was compiled from New York State Department of Transportation road construction contracts and county provided street centerline files. Attribution was developed based on the sources identified in each county's Source Usage Document (SUD). More information is available in the Product & Process Document available for download on the NYS GIS Clearinghouse.

What data was used to build the NYS Streets centerline data?

A Source Usage Document (SUD) was created for each New York State (NYS) county. The SUD spreadsheet describes what NYS (including county & local governments) and the contractor provided. The SUD also describes how the source data was used to build the streets layer. The SUDs are available for download on the NYS GIS Clearinghouse.

How accurate is the NYS Streets centerline data?

The street centerline data meets the following accuracy acceptance criteria:

Is there documentation that describes the field attributes within the NYS Streets?

The Data Dictionary that defines field descriptions and attribute definitions is available for download on the NYS GIS Clearinghouse.

I am having problems with ArcGIS 9.2 geodatabases and geocoding. Are there any known issues and/or workarounds?

I have a list of addresses to be geocoded. When following the geocoding instructions available on the NYS GIS Clearinghouse (http://gis.ny.gov/gisdata/inventories/details.cfm?DSID=932), the geocoding process started, completed geocoding part of my address list and then died. Do you have any recommendations?

This is often the result of an inputted address containing the ampersand (&) symbol. If the ampersand symbol (&) is used in any address, that address and any following address will not geocode without modifying the locator. Instead, replacing the ampersand sign with the word 'and' spelled out is suggested.

Why does the low address number appear in the "FROM" field on some street segments, and at other times the high address number appears in the "FROM" field?

The "FROM" and "TO" designations do not represent the direction of arc addressing. Instead, they represent the direction of arc digitization.

How are NYS Streets geometry or attribute errors reported?

A web-based application that will allow users to easily submit updates and corrections is available to interested county and local government partners. For more information on data maintinence partnership oppertunties please contact:

How can I tell what kind of changes have occurred in the NYS Streets file since the previous data release?

Refer to the Change Log shapefile to see exactly what has been changed on individual street segment in the current NYS Streets file. Each Change Log consists of idividual street segments that had its geometry or attribution changed. Older Change Logs just had points located at the middle of each individual street segment that had its geometry or attribution changed.

The ChangeType attribute indicates the type of change as follows:

  • Delete - Street segment has been deleted
  • Add - Street segment has been added
  • Geomod - Street segment has been realigned to new orthoimagery; attributes might also have been modified
  • Attmod - Street has had one or more attributes changed; no realignment
  • The ChangeDesc attribute provides details on what attributes have been changed.

How do I interpret the attribute changes noted in the ChangeDesc attribute?

Each attribute on a street segment that has been changed since the previous month's NYS Streets posting is listed, followed immediately by its previous value and its new value with the two values being separated by a vertical line.

Format: <attribute1>:<previous value>|<new value> <attribute2>:<previous value>|<new value>

Is there a way to select from the NYS Streets file those street segments listed in the Change Log as having been changed?

Yes, you can relate the Change Log file to the NYS Streets file using the Dynamap_ID unique identifiers as follows:

  • To see exactly what segments in the NYS Streets file have been added or had their geometry modified, join the Change Log files using the DynID_New attribute to the Dynamap_ID attribute in the new version of the NYS Streets file. Then select ChangeType = add or ChangeType = geomod.
  • To see exactly what segments in the NYS Streets file have only had their attributes modified, join the Change Log files using the DynID_Old attribute to the Dynamap_ID attribute in the new version of the NYS Streets file. Then select ChangeType = attmod.
  • To see exactly what segments in the NYS Streets file have been deleted, join the Change Log files using the DynID_Old attribute to the Dynamap_ID attribute in the previous version of the NYS Streets file. Then select ChangeType = delete.
