Web Services

The orthoimagery cached map layers displayed in NYS Orthos Online can be accessed through web services. We will continue working to optimize their performance.

Desktop GIS users with ArcGIS can connect to the imagery as ArcGIS Services. Please note that ArcGIS version 10 provides better performance than 9.x when using these services.

OGC-compliant Web Map Services(WMS) are available too.

The layers are available for use by web application developers as REST Endpoints.

For best performance, we recommend setting your coordinate system to WGS 1984 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere.

ArcGIS Server connection for ArcGIS desktop versions 9.3.1 and 10:

This connection will make complete, multi-temporal statewide orthoimagery coverage available. In ArcGIS, Add Data->GIS Servers->Add ArcGIS Server and enter the following URL when prompted:

The service called Latest loads statewide NY Statewide Digital Orthoimagery Program (NYSDOP) imagery coverage using the latest versions. It is a dynamic map service which results in slightly slower performance than the cached services for individual years described below. However, providing the dynamic service greatly reduces the white space issue associated with the cached services.

The connection also makes individual years (2010, 2009, etc.) of imagery available using cached map services. We have noticed an issue where solid white space appears outside of the imagery in the cached service. This white space may obscure other imagery layers or data. This issue in ArcGIS versions 9.3.1 and 10 is documented by Esri (NIM060043). Refreshing, panning and/or zooming the map may help.

OGC Web Mapping Services (WMS):

OGC services are meant to work in a wider array of software. The URLS need the ending question mark (?).The WSDL links provide xml format descriptions of the location of a service and the operations (or methods) it exposes. In MapInfo 10 set Coordinate Reference System projection to "EPSG 4326" (SRS value) or "Popular Visualization CRS" (projection description value).

The following service provides statewide coverage using the latest versions of the orthoimagery. It is a dynamic service which results in slightly slower performance than the cached service described below. However, providing the dynamic service reduces the alignment issue described below.

The following connections are available for individual years as listed below and are meant to work in a wider array of software. The URLS need the ending question mark (?). The WSDL links provide xml format descriptions of the location of a service and the operations (or methods) it exposes.

We have noted the following software specific items:

REST Endpoints for application developers:

The following service provides statewide coverage using the latest versions of the orthoimagery. It is a dynamic service.

The following connections are for loading NYSDOP data for a single year. For overviews of each year's extent, see the program status pages.

To load statewide coverage from USGS' National Aerial Photography Program (1994-1999), use the following connection.
