Mission Statement

Advise the State on effective use of geospatial technology resulting in tangible benefits to New York State.

The NYS Geospatial Advisory Council (formerly called the GIS Coordinating Body), was established in 1996 by the Office For Technology (OFT), the predecessor agency to ITS, as an advisory workgroup of NYS GIS stakeholders representing federal, state, and local governments, non-profits, academics, and private interests.

Through its advisory role, the GAC provides guidance to the ITS, Office of the GIO on how to improve the delivery of public services, protect the public and the environment, and enhance the business climate for the benefit of the State, its municipalities, businesses and citizens, through the use of GIS and related technologies.

The GAC, which meets quarterly, is composed of 22 representatives representing the various sectors and geographic regions. Sixteen of these representatives are nominated and elected to 3-year terms. The other positions are ex-officio.

The GAC was instrumental in guiding the development of the new GIS Clearinghouse, and plays a major role in NYS GIS strategic planning efforts.
