NYS Contours

Contour Download Application & Web Service

The Contour Index web service can be loaded into your GIS software, from there a user can identify on an area they would like to download and click the link in the "DIRECT_DL" field to download the contours they are interested in.

Contour Status

Contours are updated from new bare earth Digital Elevation Models(DEM). DEM is a product of LIDAR collection, so new DEM and then contours will be generated as LIDAR projects are completed. For more information on ongoing LIDAR projects please visit the LIDAR Status page.

Contour Generation Process

Contours generated by NYS were generated using Global Mapper "Generate Contours" tool and running against the bare earth digital elevation model. Contours are stored within a File Geodatabase by town, each town has several contour intervals the end-user can choose from including 2ft, 10ft, 20ft, 50ft, 100ft, 250ft, and 500ft with a scale triggered layer file.

Federal contours (FEMA & USGS) were delivered as individual tiles, to make the contours more useable and distributable NYS merged the tiles by town and clipped them to a 200ft buffer of the town. The contours were then imported into a file Geodatabase where they are stored by town and have several contour intervals the end-user can choose from including 1ft, 2ft, 10ft, 20ft, 50ft, 100ft, 250ft, and 500ft with a scale triggered layer file.
