USGS 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP)

Program background, status, availability, and important links

3DHP Background

The USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) was retired on October 1, 2023.  Since the retirement of the NHD, USGS has been in a transition period to the 3DHP.  3DHP will follow the system used to create the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), and will build on the data generated from that program.

  • 3DHP will provide national consistency while meeting local needs
  • Goal to acquire new hydrography standardized to align vertically, horizontally, and temporally with 3DEP data, as well as other improvements
  • Data acquisition process to follow 3DEP Best Practices including coordinated governance and data acquisition
  • Building on decades of work and concept from current hydrography products

3DHP Status in New York

There are several areas being collected within NYS that are funded by Federal agencies.  In addition, NYS ITS is exploring opportunities for funding and partnerships to collect and share 3DHP data.  NYS currently does not have dedicated funding or a 3DHP data program.
